PyeongChang has celebrated three years
to go until it hosts the 2018 Olympic Winter Games with an event dubbed
‘One Day in PyeongChang’. More than 500 participants – including
representatives of the Korean government, national assembly, sports
industry, local residents and PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee
(POCOG) staff – took part in the festivities, which were held at the
Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre and the site for the Olympic Stadium.
After participants came together to form a
large-scale replica of the official PyeongChang 2018 emblem, 60 runners
took part in a 3km relay between the two Games venues, which will host
the ski jumping events and Opening and Closing Ceremonies respectively.
Once at the Olympic Stadium site, attendees were treated to a preview of elements of the Opening Ceremony, which will be held on 9 February 2018, before a time capsule was buried bearing good luck messages for the Winter Games.
“Today, all related stakeholders preparing for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games were able to feel the climate and be immersed in the atmosphere of the actual Opening Ceremony to be held in three years’ time,” said Yang-Ho Cho, President of POCOG. “By building seamless teamwork and widening our understanding of each other, all organisations will be able to work more closely.”
As part of the celebrations, POCOG also formally appointed former Olympic speed skater Lee Kyou Hyuk as a Games Ambassador. He was joined by Olympic figure skating gold medallist Kim Yuna, who is already an ambassador for the PyeongChang 2018 Games.
